Kingston continued their unbeaten start to the season with an emphatic victory over Mundulla by 88 points. The Saints improved their season record to 4-0 after putting in their best performance of the season so far.
Kingston jumped out of the blocks with quick goals from Brandon Tapfield, Todd Lockwood and Ryan Clarke. The Saints had started strong and were gathering plenty of the ball early and getting it forward. Saints had workers in Hagan Wright, Brandon Tapfield and Thomas Matsouliadis who kept driving the ball into dangerous scoring spots. Mundulla got on the scoreboard with their first goal of the game through Jacob Pedlar. The Tigers were looking to settle into the contest, and Lincoln Weatherald, Nathan Studham and Jacob Grosser had started the contest positively. Kingston put their foot down and opened up a big lead as they piled on five goals in a row. Kingston scored majors from Sam Robertson, Alex Barns, James Siviour, Jack Harding and Todd Lockwood. Kingston had control of the general play, and they were getting rewarded on the scoreboard. The Saints had opened up a 42-point lead by quarter time.
The second quarter was a much closer affair and a tighter contest, as there were a lot of tackles and ball-ups. The Tigers got the first goal of the quarter through Billy Wiese to cut the Saints’ lead back to 35 points. Kingston got a reply through James Siviour as the Saints kept the Tigers at arm’s length. The general contest was willing, and neither team gave an inch of space for most of the quarter. Kingston’s Jack Armfield, Chris Draper, Brandon Tapfield, William Watts and Thomas Matsouliadis were good for the Saints in and around the contest. Tom Gaden was a shining light for the Tigers out of defence. Lincoln Weatherald, Jacob Grosser and Jacob Pedlar were showing fight for the Tigers in the contest. Kingston led by 43 points at halftime.
Mundulla kicked the first goal of the second half as Jack Guy slotted through a major to bring the Saints’ lead back to 37 points. Kingston got on top in general play again as players such as Hagan Wright, Alex Barns, Brandon Tapfield, Ben Kennedy, Sam Robertson and Thomas Matsouliadis were getting on top in the around-the-ground contests and winning most of the clearances. Chris Draper was providing the Saints with lots of runs around the field and kicked a goal. Ben Kennedy put through two more Kingston goals as the Saints were piling on the score to match their dominance in general play. The Saints pushed the lead out to 63 points when Sam Robertson slotted another goal for the home team. Mundulla hit back and got their fourth goal on the board through Jacob Grosser. Jacob was playing a good game in the ruck. Kingston got a late goal, though Ben Warner, as the veteran, helped the Saints get a lead of 64 points by three-quarter time.
Kingston continued to win lots of the football in the fourth quarter as they shared the ball around among their players. Kingston’s Brandon Tapfield was playing a great game as he took some great marks and moved the ball to his teammates with great passes. Kingston’s Thomas Matsouliadis opened the Saints’ scoring in the fourth quarter with a straight kick. James Siviour (2 goals), Luke Watson and Todd Lockwood shared the next four goals between them as the Saints pushed ahead by 93 points. Hagan Wright was leading the running charge as he ran the game out strongly, and had help from Jack Armfield, Ben Kennedy, Sam Robertson and William Watts during the quarter. Mundulla kicked the last goal of the game through Billy Wiese to add some respectability to their scoreline. Kingston proved too strong in the end and continued their unbeaten run to start the season.
